The Special Teams Have Depth

It seems that the Georgia Bulldogs will have a great season on special teams as well.  I came away from Saturday’s performance tremendously impressed with how the third phase of the game went for the Georgia Bulldogs.  Keep in mind that both of the Dawgs’ All-SEC specialists were not 100% healthy for the game.

First Team All-SEC kicker Marshall Morgan tweaked his groin in the week leading up to the ULM game.  Morgan usually performs the kickoffs, but punter Collin Barber did a nice job filling in for Morgan in those duties.

Second Team All-SEC return man Isaiah McKenzie didn’t play at all in the first game due to a lingering hamstring injury.  Players like Reggie Davis and true freshman Terry Godwin helped the Dawgs considerably in the return game.  Georgia benefits tremendously in having two suitable kicking specialists and at least three strong return men.

The team’s  strong punt blocking efforts yielded a safety for the Dawgs thanks to true freshman DeAndre Walker’s big hands.  Lorenzo Carter nearly blocked another punt or two earlier in the contest.  When Georgia is forcing the issue in the return game either with mobile, sure-handed receivers or relentless pass rushers eyeing blocked punts, I feel that this Georgia Bulldogs team elevates to an elite level.  Here’s to more strong performances from our deep special teams unit in 2015.
