The Receiving Game Will Be Different Under Schotty

With a change of guard at Offensive Coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs, we knew that Brian Schottenheimer’s offense would vary from Mike Bobo’s to some extent.  Where I noticed it the most on Saturday was in the receiving game.

Though UGA only attempted 14 passes yesterday due to a dominant ground game and the game being shortened, I felt that Schotty’s play calling was a little more spread than Bobo’s.  Yes, Georgia runs one of the most recognizable pro style offenses in the college game, but it looked to me the passing game was more centralized around making plays in space than stretching the field vertically or through possession receiving.

This perhaps is a product of a new system and the quarterbacks’ limitations to fully expand the play book, but I like the play calling of Coach Schottenheimer for the most part.  Between Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey, I didn’t see either quarterback force throws or make poor decisions with the football.

It serves UGA to have their running game be the focal point of their offense, so it makes perfect sense for UGA to continue game management tactics with their new man under center.  I’m sure had Faton Bauta played, we would have seen similar things from him that we saw in both Lambert and Ramsey.

I like the screen game of Schotty’s and his play calling on third down.  The two touchdown passes really stood out to me were Jeb Blazevich’s and Malcolm Mitchell’s.  It proved to me that though UGA may again have a conservative passing attack in 2015, they are comfortable in connecting on strikes through the air, too.

We will certainly learn more about the Georgia Bulldogs in their next game when they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.  UGA will travel to Nashville to try to anchor down the ‘Dores in their SEC Opener on the 12th.  Great first week for the program.  Go Dawgs!
