Malcolm Mitchell: The Top Dawg at WR for UGA
By John Buhler
Malcolm Mitchell had a great start to his senior season with the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon against the ULM Warhawks.
Malcolm Mitchell enters 2015 as a RS Senior after what has been an injury-plagued career while in Athens playing for Mark Richt‘s Georgia Bulldogs. Coming out of Valdosta HS in 2011, Mitchell was one of the best in-state signees of his recruiting class with his sure-handedness and his ability to stretch the field vertically.

A series of injuries his sophomore and junior seasons were temporary setbacks, but have set up Malcolm Mitchell for a tremendously promising final chapter in his UGA career. Mitchell earned Preseason 2nd Team All-SEC Honors at wideout for the Dawgs before the start of the season. Malcolm was one of three Georgia seniors allowed to travel with HC Mark Richt to Hoover, Alabama for SEC Media days earlier this summer. Mitchell even became a children’s author this past offseason with his first publication.

Dawn of the Dawg
As much as we love all the things Malcolm Mitchell does for the Georgia program off the field, will he stay healthy in 2015 and have a productive senior season? Malcolm is the elder statesman in the UGA WR corps, the familiar face in an otherwise young unit. Mitchell will have to lead by example both on and off the field in 2015, as UGA’s offense transitions under a new Offensive Coordinator in Brian Schottenheimer.
Georgia loses two terrific possession receivers in Chris Conley and Michael Bennett to the NFL. Fellow wideout Justin Scott-Wesley may not play at all this season for the Dawgs. While the TE group looks like a promising bunch, the WR unit for UGA this year enters the season as the perceived weakest unit on the Georgia offense. Malcolm Mitchell will have to become the consistent go-to playmaker in the Dawgs’ passing game if UGA wants to have a balanced offensive attack in 2015.
In the first game of the season, WR Malcolm Mitchell had 3 catches for 52 yards and a fantastic touchdown grab. Though the Georgia Bulldogs only completed 10 of 14 passes in Saturday’s game, Mitchell showed the versatility needed to lead the Dawgs’ aerial attack. He showed that he is more than just a vertical threat with a couple of nice mid-range pass catches as well.
If Malcolm Mitchell can play like he did in Week 1 for the rest of the season, then the Dawgs WR group seems like it will be in good shape. He will be a great role model for young receivers like Terry Godwin, Isaiah McKenzie, and Shakenneth Williams.

Expect to see Malcolm Mitchell do a little bit of everything in Coach Schottenheimer’s passing game. Malcolm won’t just be a vertical threat in this offensive system, as Schotty likes to emphasize Yards After Catch (YAC) with accurately placed balls in the short to medium passing game. In a year of transition with the wide receivers, Malcolm Mitchell has no choice but to become the Top Dawg for UGA on the outside. I feel that he will rise to the challenge this fall for the Georgia Bulldogs.
