AP Poll, September 8th: UGA 10th, GT 15th, SEC Gets 10

The 2nd 2015 AP Poll came out this afternoon, with Georgia dropping a spot to 10th for some reason, despite manhandling ULM, 51-14. Georgia Tech improved to 15th with a dominating performance over Alcorn State, 69-6.

The AP Top 25 Poll features both Power 5 schools in Georgia in the Top 15, with UGA at 10th and Tech at 15th.  Both looked strong in their home openers over ULM and Alcorn State respectively.  How did the voters shape this week’s AP Poll?

In the Top 5, Ohio State has a firm grip on number one after beating Virginia Tech, 42-24 in Blacksburg.  Alabama moves to number two after a 35-17 win over #20 Wisconsin.  TCU drops back to number three after barely surviving a Power 5 non-conference road game against Minnesota 23-17.  Baylor and Michigan State stay at four and five with convincing wins over SMU and Western Michigan, respectively.

To round out the Top 10, Auburn, Oregon, and Southern Cal remain 6 through 8.  Notre Dame finds itself in the Top 10 thanks to a decimation of Texas, 38-3 to move to number nine.  Despite winning 51-14 over notorious giant killer ULM, UGA drops to 10th in the second AP Poll of 2015.  Notre Dame looked really good over a completely lost Texas Longhorns team.

11 through 15 include Florida State, who fell out of the Top 10, Clemson, UCLA, LSU all stay at 12 to 14, and Georgia Tech moves up a spot to number 15 thanks to Cumberland-esque beat down of Alcorn State, 69-6.  With LSU idle, one could argue that Tech could have moved up two spots this week to 14, but the Jackets are certainly trending up regardless.

16 through 20 are as follows: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Boise State.  I’m surprised that A&M didn’t move in this AP Poll after beating the former #15 team in the country in Arizona State.  Ole Miss looked very good over UT-Martin but stay at 17.  Arkansas and Oklahoma stay put at 18 and 19.

The Boise State Broncos got their revenge over former HC Chris Petersen as Boise bested the Washington Huskies, 16-13 to move up to 20.  Boise State looks like a New Year’s Six Bowl team again in 2015, getting the coveted non-Power 5 automatic bid.  With their track record over the last decade and a half, I have no problem with their spot in the College Football Landscape.

To round out the Top 25 of the AP Poll, Missouri moves up three spots to 20.  I don’t think beating Southeastern Missouri State merits a three-spot bump in the AP Poll.  How did that happen?  Arizona stays at 22, Tennessee moves up to 23 after beating Bowling Green State 59-30.  Defensively, I don’t see how UT moves up two spots.  Offensively, maybe I get it?  Utah and Mississippi State round out the Top 25.

The SEC has a record 10 teams in the AP Top 25 Poll, with the entire SEC West ranked.  Georgia, Missouri, and Tennessee make it a cool ten for the SEC.  People that don’t like the SEC are going to hate that two fifths of the AP Poll belongs to the conference.  Keep in mind though that the entire SEC West has to play six games in the division before they will have a division winner.

The Pac-12 boasts five teams in the Top 25 Poll, the ACC three, the Big 12 three, and the Big 10 two.  Independent Notre Dame and Mountain West Boise State make it 25.  Overall, there is not a ton to argue about in the second edition of the AP Poll.  Georgia could move up should they destroy Vanderbilt in Nashville.  Georgia Tech could look good again in the non-conference by stopping the Tulane Green Wave.

Outside of UGA and GT’s games, there are three games that college football fans need to try to watch.  #19 Oklahoma travels to Knoxville to face #23 Tennessee in the second half of a home-and-away series between the Vols and Sooners.  #14 LSU opens their 2015 season by venturing to Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville to take on SEC West rival #25 Mississippi State.  Another fantastic home-and-away series between two series playoff contenders will take place in East Lansing as the #5 Michigan State Spartans welcome #7 Oregon to their house this year.
