Ryan Weber to Make MLB Debut on Tuesday for Braves

Rookie Ryan Weber is set to make his MLB debut for the Atlanta Braves against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday in place of Matt Wisler.

In Wisler’s last start against the Washington Nationals, he did not make it out of the 2nd inning as he allowed 7 earned runs in his 1.0 inning of work. Wisler would make his first appearance out of the bullpen for the Braves, pitching 2 scoreless innings while only allowing 1 hit.

It was encouraging to see Matt Wisler pitch well in Sunday, even if it was out of the bullpen. Over the past month, Wisler has owned an unsightly 7.85 ERA in the month of August.

  • Because Wisler is unable to start on Tuesday because of his bullpen outing this past Sunday, enter Ryan Weber, the latest rookie to join the Atlanta Braves young starting rotation. Weber has played a combined 38 games with both AA Mississippi and AAA Gwinnett this season, owning a 6-5 with a 2.35 ERA. While with AAA Gwinnett, he had a 6-3 record and a 2.21 ERA in 27 games, 6 being starts.

Ryan Weber has a very low walk rate, which is one of the primary reasons that the Braves may have promoted him to start in place of Matt Wisler. In 99.2 innings this season, Weber only walked 10 batters while striking out 59. Weber was originally selected in the 2008 Free Agent draft by the Philadelphia Philles, so it will be interesting to see how the rookie performs against the organization that drafted him.

The 25-year-old Ryan Weber has spent the last seven seasons in the minors. Also, David O’Brien of the AJC reports that Ryan Weber will also be the 59th different player to suit up for the Atlanta Braves this season: 9 more than the previous record of 50 before this season.

Given Ryan Weber’s numbers at the minor league level this season, I am excited to see how he pitches on Tuesday. With the struggles of the Atlanta Braves’ rotation as of late, it is not out of the realm of possibility to believe that if Weber pitches well, he may have found himself a spot in the rotation for at least the rest of the season, and perhaps next season as well.

If Weber’s low walk rate translates well into the majors, we could see Williams Perez being used out of the bullpen for the rest of the season. The Braves will try to make it two-in-a-row against the Philadelphia Phillies this evening at Citizens Bank Park. Go Braves!
