The Atlanta Braves lost their second consecutive game to the New York Mets in this four game series on Friday by a final score of 5-1.

Matt Wisler returned to the Atlanta Braves rotation after a brief stint the bullpen following a horrific start in Washington last Friday where he allowed 7 runs in only 1.0 inning pitched against the Nationals. Tonight, Wisler was a completely different pitcher, allowing only 2 earned runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings pitched.

Though Wisler struggled at times, he displayed more composure than he has in previous starts, being able to mitigate any damage he encountered. Of course, Matt Wisler has been a much better pitcher at home than he has been on the road, owning a 3.52 ERA at Turner Field while having a 7.42 ERA away from home.

The New York Mets struck first on Friday, as Yoenes Cespedes continued his torrid second half with the New York Mets, doubling home Curtis Granderson in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Metropolitans a 1-0 lead. Matt Wisler would get out of the inning without incurring any further damage.

The Atlanta Braves had a chance to break the game open in the bottom of the 4th inning as the loaded the bases, but with 2 outs Matt Wisler grounded out to end the inning. Offense was once again a struggle for the Braves on this night.

The Mets increased their lead in the top of the 5th inning, as Matt Wisler gave up a rookie mistake by balking, allowing Yoenes Cespedes to score and advancing Curtis Granderson to third base, making the score 2-0 in favor of the visitors. Though Wisler pitched well on Saturday, it is still clear he has some growing up to do, as evidenced by his 5th inning balk.

The Atlanta Braves finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5th inning, as rookie Daniel Castro hit a solo home-run to narrow New York’s lead to 2-1. That would be the only run the Atlanta Braves would score on the night.

New York was gifted a run in the 8th inning by catcher Christian Bethancourt. Following a two out single by Michael Cuddyer off of Arodys Vizcaino, and a single in the next at bat by Ruben Tejada, Bethancourt was unable to catch a strike down the middle by Vizcaino, allowing the ball to roll to the backstop and scoring the speedy Eric Young Jr. to make the score 3-1.

Bethancourt’s poor play continued on the offensive end in the bottom of the 8th inning, as he struck out with two men on and a chance to cut into the Mets lead, ending the inning and any hope the Atlanta Braves had of mounting a comeback. The Mets added 2 more runs in the top of the 9th inning after a 2-run homer by none other than the streaking Yoenes Cespedes.

After Friday’s game, Andrelton Simmons now has 24 hits in 50 at bats against the New York Mets this season. The Atlanta Braves will try again tomorrow night in game 3 of the 4-game series with the New York Mets as Williams Perez toes the rubber for the Bravos. The Mets will counter with Noah Syndergaard.
