Atlanta Braves Swept by Mets, Lose 10-7

The Atlanta Braves let the series finale against the New York Mets slip away, as the bullpen once again couldn’t keep it together.  Braves lose 10-7 to New York.

Atlanta was one out away from winning this ball game.  Peter Moylan had already recorded two outs in the top of the ninth inning when Fredi Gonzalez pulled the Australian sidearmer after a Juan Lagares double landed just out of the reach of a diving Cameron Maybin in centerfield.

Gonzalez brought in Ryan Kelly to try to get the final out in a 7-4 ball game in the Atlanta Braves favor.  Then Daniel Murphy teed off on a Kelly offering to tie the game up at 7 in the top of the ninth.  In extra innings, the Braves bullpen kept on handing out free passes, issuing two bases loaded walks in the top of the tenth.

This was the first time the New York Mets have ever pulled off a four-game sweep on the road against the Atlanta Braves.  Today’s loss marks the 13th consecutive home defeat for our Atlanta ball club.  The Fredi Gonzalez How to Not Effectively Use a Bullpen Clinic was as sharp as ever.  It’s deplorable how bad he has become at handling his relief corps.  Why does he not put players in position to succeed time and again?  It’s beyond maddening.

Ryan Weber pitched a great ball game, going 6.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits, while striking out two.  The two runs that went to Weber in the 7th inning came on a Curtis Granderson single to right field off Matt Marksberry.  Really the only mistake Weber made this afternoon was the one pitch that Michael Conforto clobbered into the right field seats for a two-run homer in the top of the 2nd.

Atlanta had 13 hits today, scoring 7 runs.  Even when the team generates offense, the pitching staff doesn’t seem to have it together.  The New York Mets are very good baseball team that should win the NL East handedly over the Washington Nationals.

I’m struggling at the thought of the Atlanta Braves having to play AL East juggernaut Toronto this week.  The amount of offense the Blue Jays are able to generate is astounding.  Fortunately, the Atlanta Braves will have a much-needed day off before the Jays come to town.  The play of Ryan Weber and Daniel Castro in particular were strong points for the club today. This has been a long season for our Atlanta Braves…
