Walt Weiss
Speaking of former Atlanta Braves players, Walt Weiss is the Manager of the Colorado Rockies, and has at least another year left on the contract extension granted to him in 2013. He last suited up for the Braves in 2000, but retired soon afterwards. His record sits at 187-248 with the Rockies, and it’s not hard to imagine that after 3 losing years with the team, he could be on the way out.
Players have been outspoken with praise on Weiss’s part, as he’s managed to do the best he can with a Rockies squad that has had arguably less talent than the Braves have had in the past few years. Walt Weiss is interesting because like Matt Diaz, he had no managerial experience at the major league level. He was thrust head first into the fire, and has arguably handled it quite admirably.
Again, as someone who is familiar with the organization, he wouldn’t be a terrible hire for the Atlanta Braves. He’d certainly give more than the current manager who looks as confused as we all do each game. I would welcome the Weiss pickup because even if he hasn’t been able to turn the Rockies around, he’s kept them at least somewhat steady. So just think about what he could do with some young players who are on the upswing and if the Braves go after some guys in free agency?
