Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba!  Simba!  Andrelton Simmons delivers the walkoff single to the rightfield side to plate Todd Cunningham from third to give the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 victory over the AL East leading Toronto Blue Jays.

The home losing streak for the Atlanta Braves is no more.  Andrelton “Simba” Simmons was the Lion King tonight, winning the Braves their first home game since August 24th, in walkoff fashion nonetheless.  This was Simmons’ 4th career walkoff hit.

The Atlanta Braves bullpen got it done today somehow in 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.  Our normally leaky bullpen did not allow a hit against arguably the best offense in Major League Baseball in the Toronto Blue Jays.

Julio Teheran pitched well in his no-decision, before being pulled in the sixth inning due to a high pitch count.  Teheran allowed two earned runs on five hits and four walks, striking out seven tonight.  Julio rose to the challenge and competed well against on of baseball’s best lefthanders of the last 15 years, Blue Jays starter LHP Mark Buehrle.

Atlanta out hit Toronto 10 to 5 tonight, with C A.J. Pierzynski leading the ways with three hits, including a big one in the ninth inning to move pinch runner Todd Cunningham from first to third with no outs.  Adonis Garcia and Nick Markakis each had a pair of base knocks tonight, too.

The only Blue Jays bat that proved difficult tonight in the series opener was SS Cliff Pennington‘s, who had two hits filling in for the often-injured and newly acquired Toronto Blue Jay SS Troy Tulowitzki.  The Atlanta pitching staff struck out 10 Jays tonight, including slugger RF Jose Bautista three times.

  • The big boppers of the Toronto Blue Jays weren’t able to navigate any of the six Atlanta Braves pitchers they faced tonight, leaving 8 runners on base and hitting 1-5 with runners in scoring position.  Atlanta wasn’t great in that latter category either (1-6 RISP), but made that one hit count with Andrelton Simmons’ walkoff.

This game was reminiscent to earlier Atlanta Braves games this season, where the team was able to play small ball and manufacture just enough runs to beat their opponent.  The only homer tonight belonged to Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak who took Julio Teheran deep to the opposite field in the top of the sixth with his solo shot.

Tonight’s win was a great start to the series.  Perhaps Shelby Miller ends his 21 game winless streak tomorrow night when he goes against the formidable southpaw that is David Price.  Here’s to hoping for another low-scoring pitchers’ duel between the Atlanta Braves and the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow night.  Go Braves!
