Atlanta Braves to Host Phillies for Three
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves will host National League East rival Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set this weekend. Both teams are no longer in playoff contention, but interesting things always seem to happen in this NL East rivalry.
Atlanta (57-90) finished their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays, dropping two of three to the AL East leaders. Philadelphia (56-91) is coming off being swept home by NL East rival Washington Nationals. This is a battle of the two worst teams in the National League. Things are about to get really interesting.

In tonight’s opener, Williams Perez (5-6, 5.36 ERA) will take on southpaw Adam Morgan (5-6, 4.60 ERA). Perez is 1-1 in his last three starts, averaging 3 earned runs in 6 innings pitched. He is coming off a no-decision against the New York Mets on the 12th, where his line was 6.0 IP, 8 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts.

Perez has not been the same since taking that liner off his leg in Pittsburgh, but has averaged a quality start for the Atlanta Braves in his last three starts. Maybe tonight’s game against the Phillies is another step in the right direction for the Braves’ rookie right hander?
Tomorrow’s tilt features two rookie righthanders: Ryan Weber (0-1, 4.38 ERA) for the Atlanta Braves and Jerad Eickhoff (1-3, 3.90 ERA) for the Philadelphia Phillies. Weber will make his third Major League start for the Braves on Saturday night. He is coming off a no-decision in his last start against the Mets on the 13th, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing 4 earned runs.

The Atlanta Braves coaching staff has liked Ryan Weber’s mound presence in his two starts. Hopefully he can continue to inspire the young Braves rotation with a strong performance tomorrow night.
In Sunday afternoon’s series finale, Atlanta will send 10-game winner Julio Teheran (10-7, 4.34) to the mound to square off with RHP Aaron Nola (6-2, 4.11 ERA). Teheran is coming off a no-decision in the first game of the Toronto Blue Jays series where Atlanta won it on Andrelton Simmons‘ walkoff single to the right side in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Teheran has been the Atlanta Braves’ best pitcher by far since making that adjustment to pitch from the first-base side of the rubber. Julio is 3-1 with a 3.61 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in his last 7 starts for the Atlanta Braves. Don’t expect a sweep for either team in this series, but I do like the Atlanta Braves to take two of three at home in this three game set with Philly.
