AP Poll, September 20th: UGA Stays at 7, GT Falls to 20

The AP Poll for September 20th has the Georgia Bulldogs staying put a #7 after destroying South Carolina at home 52-20, while it has the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets dropping to #20 following their 30-22 road loss to Notre Dame.

In this week’s AP Poll, both of our region’s Power 5 teams remain in the Top 25. UGA sticks at 7th after eviscerating the South Carolina Gamecocks at home 52-20. GT plummets to 20th after losing a touch road game to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 30-22 in South Bend.

The Top 5 this week are as follows: #1 Ohio State, #2 Michigan State, TCU and Ole Miss share the #3 spot, and Baylor sits at #5. I don’t really have any major complaints here, though I’m a little shocked that Ole Miss skyrocketed 12 spots in this week’s AP Poll. Beating Alabama on the road is about as good as it gets for a quality win, but I’m not sure it merited a 12-point leapfrogging, since we don’t know if Bama is as good as they have been in years past.

6 through 10 are as follows: #6 Notre Dame, #7 Georgia #8 LSU, #9 UCLA, #10 Florida State. Notre Dame had a strong home win against Georgia Tech and jumps over UGA in the most recent AP Poll, gaining two spots. I can’t really blame the Associated Press for putting Notre Dame at #6. I would have thought that UGA would have been at least sixth, possibly fifth in this week’s poll. This must make up for jumping three spots after beating Vanderbilt last week when many questioned the leap.

11 through 15 are as follows: #11 Clemson, #12 Alabama, #13 Oregon, #14 Texas A&M, #15 Oklahoma. These seem like teams that are still in contention for the College Football Playoff. Bama drops to 12th which is understandable, but how does Oregon lose ground after clobbering Georgia State at home?

  • 16 through 20 are as follows: #16 Arizona, #17 Northwestern, #18 Utah, #19 USC, #20 Georgia Tech. Both Wildcats move up significantly in their games. U of A moves from 20 to 16 and NU soars from 23 to 17 in this week’s AP Poll. Utah continues to look solid. Both USC and GT plummet from their tough losses to traditional rivals in Stanford and Notre Dame respectively.

21 through 25 are as follows: #21 Stanford, Wisconsin and BYU sit tied at 22, #24 Oklahoma State, #25 Missouri. Stanford climbs back into the Top 25 after beating rival USC. Their loss at Northwestern looks better now that the Wildcats are #17 in the country. BYU drops a little after losing a close one to UCLA. Missouri barely held on to beat UConn and they round out the Top 25.

As much as I wanted UGA to move up in the rankings, I’ll take the #7 ranking entering Week 4’s home game versus the Southern Jaguars. Though Tech lost, they still belong in the Top 20. Losing to #6 Notre Dame on the road is a quality loss all things considered.
