Atlanta Braves Shut Out by Mets, 4-0
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves drop the series opener in Queens to the New York Mets, 4-0 Monday Night. This is Atlanta’s 91st loss of the season and their 16th time being shut out in 2015.
Shelby Miller was on the mound tonight for the Atlanta Braves, so no, Atlanta wasn’t going to win the ball game, not this year at least. The Shelby Miller winless streak continues, as the Atlanta Braves couldn’t generate any runs for the Braves’ lone 2015 All-Star representative. Atlanta was promptly shut out 4-0 tonight.

This was the 23rd straight game that Shelby Miller did not win his start. The MLB record is at 27, so we might have to keep an eye on that total next spring. Miller won’t have but maybe two or three more starts in 2015.

Miller allowed two earned runs in his six innings of work tonight. The seven hits and the four walks were what did him in. Though Daniel Castro couldn’t turn that first inning double play to end the frame, the Mets were able to plate one before a confused Daniel Murphy ended up getting tagged out. Michael Conforto took Miller deep in the bottom of the second inning for a solo shot as well.
LHP Andrew McKirahan struggled mightily in his relief appearance of Miller, allowing two earned runs on three hits before being pulled by Fredi Gonzalez in favor of RHP Brandon Cunniff, who then completed the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rookie RHP Daniel Winkler made his big league debut tonight in the top of the eighth, walking one and striking out two. Gonzalez let Winkler in his night on a high note after his second strikeout, bringing in Danny Burawa to retire the final batter in the eighth inning.

Offensively it was a struggle at the plate for the Atlanta Braves tonight. Atlanta only had five hits tonight, with A.J. Pierzynski as the lone Braves with a pair this evening. The New York pitching staff was able to get Atlanta to make outs through contact, only striking out five times as a team.
Outside of Pierzynski, the other bright spot at the plate tonight for Atlanta was Pedro Ciriaco who had another pinch hit. The guy has been on a tear at the plate this season as a pinch hitter. If only he was on the 2014 Atlanta Braves, a team that existed to strand runners and not manufacture runs.
There are only 11 more games left for the 2015 Atlanta Braves. At least with this win for the New York Mets, it means the magic number for them to win the NL East over Washington is now only 7. Maybe the Braves can take either game remaining in this rivalry road series. Go Braves!
