Atlanta Braves Drop Near Comeback 12-11 to Fish
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves drop a near comeback to the Miami Marlins down in South Beach 12-11 on Friday Night.
The Atlanta Braves almost overcame an 11-4 deficit to beat the Marlins on the road Friday Night. However, the team could not get another run or two across the plate in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out. Andrelton Simmons‘ strikeout in that inning was horrendous, the worst at-bat I’ve seen from an Atlanta Brave this season. How do you strike out that badly in that situation?

But it wasn’t as bad as Ryan Weber‘s 4th career start. The rookie right hander didn’t make it out of the third inning, as he surrendered seven earned runs on nine hits. His ERA on the year ballooned to 5.91 after his lousy start Friday night.

That saddest part about Weber’s start was that the Atlanta Braves had given him four first inning runs off Marlins ace Jose Fernandez. Fernandez doesn’t lose at Marlins Park and Atlanta put up four on the former NL Rookie of the Year in the first inning. The first run was a leadoff homer from Nick Markakis, the same Nick Markakis who only had two home runs on the year entering Game #153 of 2015!
Sugar Ray Marimon didn’t fare any better than Weber in his relief work tonight. Marimon allowed four earned runs on six hits in his inning plus of work. Maybe that’s why he pitches so sparingly.
At least Freddie Freeman has found his sweet stroke again, despite obvious pain in his wrist. Freeman went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning off Brian Ellington. Freddie also scored 3 of the Atlanta Braves’ 11 runs tonight. Michael Bourn and Hector Olivera also had three hits tonight. Atlanta had 16 hits tonight. Too bad Miami had 20 this evening…

The bullpen looked decent tonight, outside of Marimon, combining for 5 otherwise scoreless innings for the Atlanta Braves. The pitching staff threw to a ton of contact tonight, with only two strikeouts and two walks in 41 plate appearances for the Miami Marlins this evening.
This was one of those unbelievably rare games that every starting position player on both teams had at least one hit in this game. Even weirder, every Marlins starting position player had at least two base hits this evening.
When was the last time that both teams starters all had at least one hit in a ball game and one of those teams had all their hitters one through eight have at least a pair of base knocks? I can’t say I’ve ever seen this in a Major League game before. Even in a game where both teams are mathematically eliminated from postseason play, there is always the possibility you might get to see something that you’ve never seen before. That’s why I love baseball. Go Braves!
