Greyson Lambert’s Accuracy Transforms UGA’s Offense

When Greyson Lambert transferred from the University of Virginia after graduating to come play for the Georgia Bulldogs, many thought that he was just brought in to fill out a needed scholarship quarterback spot.

Little did we know that Greyson Lambert would come down from Charlottesville late in the summer to command the vacant starting quarterback job with the Georgia Bulldogs. Lambert didn’t have an impressive tenure with the Hoos at UVA playing for Virginia HC Mike London. However in four games with UGA thus far, it is Lambert’s accuracy that is transforming the Bulldogs’ offensive attack.

Last week, Greyson Lambert set an NCAA record by completing 96% of his passes (24-25) versus South Carolina. This came as an arguably bigger surprise than him winning the starting gig before Week 1. Lambert looked especially shaky on the road versus Vanderbilt, completing 11 of 21 passes for only 116 yards.

More from UGA Football

In the last two games, Lambert has not connected on only two passes, going 24-25 against South Carolina and 9-10 versus Southern this afternoon. When you’ve completed 94% of your passes in two games (33-35) for 476 yards and 5 touchdowns in the last two games, needless to say, you’re feeling it.

What this does for Georgia’s offense is that the opposition cannot stack to box as often to account for the strong running game of UGA. Opponents have to now respect Greyson Lambert’s accurate arm and his ability to make all the throws. Lambert has completed 76% of his passes this season, with 743 yards passing, 7 touchdown passes and most importantly, zero interceptions.

Lambert’s emergence as one of the most accurate passers in the nation gives the Georgia Bulldogs even more bite on offense this season. He has a strong rapport with RS Senior Malcolm Mitchell, completing 20 passes for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns to the leader of the UGA WR corps. Greyson has shown that he can deliver the deep ball of Aaron Murray, as well as play with the poise of Hutson Mason in the pocket.

  • While I would love to see Greyson Lambert target the tight ends a bit more in OC Brian Schottenheimer‘s offense, he’s got the touch necessary to execute an exemplary screen game. Should UGA continue thrive in the screen passing game, it will be even more difficult to game plan for the dynamic backfield duo that is Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

However, Greyson Lambert’s first major test as the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs will be next Saturday when Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide comes to town. Alabama routinely out-recruits every school in the country, so we know that DC Kirby Smart‘s defense will have some of the best pure football players on it in the country, including LB Reggie Ragland.

Fortunately for UGA and Greyson Lambert, this game is Between the Hedges and Alabama already has an SEC loss on the year. Lambert has played his best football of the year in Sanford Stadium, so hopefully he can continue that trend next week in this highly anticipated football matchup. Greyson Lambert’s extraordinary play over the last two weeks should complicate Smart and Saban’s defensive strategy against the Dawgs on the first Saturday in October.
