AP Poll, September 27th: UGA in 8th, Tech Drops Out

Though the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Southern Jaguars 46-8 at home on Saturday afternoon, UGA drops a spot in this week’s AP Poll. Georgia Tech loses to Duke and doesn’t receive a vote from the Associated Press.

The Top 5 of the AP Poll are as follows: Ohio State, Michigan State, Ole Miss, TCU, and Baylor. This is the same five as last week with the only difference being that Ole Miss and TCU aren’t tied for third.

The Horned Frogs were fortunate to hold on over Texas Tech in Lubbock on a tipped pass touchdown inside of the final minute to give TCU the victory. I thought Baylor would move into playoff position, but they might next week.

More from UGA Football

Six through ten are as follows: Notre Dame, UCLA, Georgia, LSU, and Utah. I don’t have a problem with any of these teams being in the Top 10, nor do I have any issue with UCLA and Utah’s meteoric rise this week. However, I’m not sold on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as the 6th best team in the country.

Yes, they destroyed UMass, but UGA clobbered Southern. Let’s not forget that both UCLA and Utah annihilated their Pac-12 opponents on the road respectively. Utah and UCLA look scary good in the Pac-12 South. UGA and LSU are definitely title contenders in the SEC entering Week 5.

Eleven through fifteen are as follows: Florida State, Clemson, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Eleven through thirteen all drop because of the performances of UCLA and Utah. These teams are good, but not great.

  • Perhaps Alabama is great, but if they lose to Georgia in Athens in Week 5, they might drop off the AP Poll all together at 3-2. That’s a scary thought to have both Power 5 teams in Alabama out of the Top 25. It could very well happen by this time next week.

Sixteen through twenty are as follows: Northwestern, USC, Stanford, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State. These are all strong, bowl caliber teams, but I can’t say that I can see any of them in the College Football Playoff, maybe a New Years Six bowl. Keep an eye on Northwestern and Oklahoma State. If the Wildcats or Cowboys keep on winning, they could play major spoiler in the Big Ten and Big Twelve, respectively.

To close out the AP Poll, twenty-one through twenty-five are as follows: Mississippi State, Michigan, West Virginia, California, and Florida. All five teams beat respectable opponents in Week 4 and are now in the Top 25 because of it. It’s interesting to see Michigan, Cal, and Florida all in the Top 25. They’ve deserved it through the first third of the regular season.
