Devonta Freeman Can Handle a Heavy Workload

When Tevin Coleman went down during Week 2 against the New York Giants, many questioned if second-year tailback Devonta Freeman could play like a featured NFL back. His first career start was one for the ages, as Freeman had 30 carries for 141 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. He also had 5 receptions for another 52 yards.

The Atlanta Falcons have not had a running back rush for three touchdowns in a game since Michael Turner did it in 2010. Freeman did not tire in this game, as backup Terron Ward did not have a carry in this ball game. Devonta Freeman was the reason on offense the Atlanta Falcons were able to overcome the 14 point deficit to beat the Dallas Cowboys.

More from ATL All Day

What was most impressive about his performance on Sunday was that it came against the number one rushing defense in the NFL entering Week 3. Dallas’ front seven, led by linebacker Sean Lee, had no answer for Freeman in this game.

It seems like Tevin Coleman will still be out a few more games with a fractured rib, so expect Devonta Freeman to stick as the featured tailback for the Atlanta Falcons at least for a few more weeks. Perhaps the Falcons do have a terrific tandem in the backfield. Freeman’s game against the Cowboys is hopefully a sign of more great things to come from the former Florida State Seminole.
