Atlanta Braves Beat Nats 2-1, AJ Homers Twice
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves take the first game of their final series with the Washington Nationals, 2-1, thanks to a pair of A.J. Pierzynski solo homers.
It’s time to celebrate Atlanta Braves fans. Not only did our ball club beat the dreaded Washington Nationals in a one-run ball game tonight, but is it now mathematically impossible for the Atlanta Braves to lose 100 games this year! Tomahawk Chop!

Atlanta had only five hits on offense tonight versus the Nats, but three of them belonged to C AJ Pierzynski, two of which were solo shots. Pierzynski now has 9 homers on the year and has a great chance to hit .300 for the Atlanta Braves this year, sitting just a point under at .299. Not bad for a 38 year-old backstop that was going to primarily backup Christian Bethancourt this season.

Matt Wisler looked great tonight in his 7+ innings of work, allowing only one earned run on a Trea Turner solo shot in the top of the sixth. Wisler won his 7th game for the Atlanta Braves this season and might get his ERA under 5.00 in his final start of the year against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend. It rests at 5.11 as we enter the final five games.
The only downside to tonight’s game was that 3B Hector Olivera had to exit the game after being beaned by Nationals RHP Tanner Roark in the fifth inning. Olivera could barely move his left arm after being struck just above the elbow by Roark’s offering. Hopefully it isn’t anything serious.

Edwin Jackson pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the hold. Arodys Vizcaino came in to pitch the ninth, recording his 8th save on the season. I wasn’t sure if Viz was going to shut the door on the Nationals after surrendering hits to the first two batter he faced. Fortunately, AJ Pierzynski made a great snag on Ian Desmond‘s bunt attempt to turn a 2-5-3 double play. Vizcaino then struck out Matt den Dekker to end the ball game.
Never before have I been so happy for a 63rd victory on the season. In a lost season, you have to appreciate the littlest of things. The 2015 Atlanta Braves may go down in history as a bad team, but at least they can’t be remembered as a 100 loss team. Sure, the team could go 0-5 in the final 5 games, but the Braves would only be 63-99. So ha! It’s always great to beat the Nats. Go Braves!
