Atlanta Braves Promote John Coppolella to GM
By John Buhler
According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the Atlanta Braves promoted Assistant General Manager John Coppolella to General Manager. The position was vacant for the 2015 MLB Season after the firing of former GM Frank Wren, now with the Boston Red Sox organization.
The Atlanta Braves decided to keep it internal in finding their new General Manager, promoting Assistant GM John Coppolella this afternoon. This doesn’t come as a surprise as President of Baseball Operations John Hart was in essence grooming Coppy to replace the departed Frank Wren this entire 2015 MLB Season.

Hart helped build the mid-1990’s Cleveland Indians teams as their GM and spent time with the Texas Rangers organization before coming to the Atlanta Braves to help resolve the team’s front office issues. Perhaps they are still there with only Wren no longer in the picture, but now we can say that it’s on John Coppolella to get this team back on track as soon as possible.

Coppy has been with the Atlanta Braves organization for nine years now and has had great mentors along the way, including Hart and Team President/former GM John Schuerholz. Hart did his part in stockpiling assets, particularly in arm talent, while miraculously evading a 100-loss season in Atlanta. Is Coppy ready to come the rescue of the second worst team in Major League Baseball?
It’s now or never. This won’t come as a baptism by fire for Coppolella, as he’s been with the Braves through the okay and the downright terrible the last decade. He’s earned Schuerholz and Hart’s trust to run the ship. Atlanta is about to enter its most interesting offseason in possibly 15 years.

Will Atlanta keep Manager Fredi Gonzalez for the 2016 MLB Season? Is Liberty Media willing to spend the big bucks to acquire a lucrative free agent or two? Is the 2016 season going set up a contending 2017 Atlanta Braves team? Would the front office be interested in bringing back players like RF Jason Heyward, RP Craig Kimbrel, or LF Justin Upton?
These are all questions that the Atlanta brass will certainly have to answer this offseason. What we do know is that John Coppolella isn’t the man behind the scenes anymore. He’s the captain of the Atlanta Braves front office ship. We hit an iceberg a few years ago and didn’t realize it until late last year.
Can Coppy salvage a once-proud organization out of a watery demise and set sail towards building a World Series contender in the coming months? Or are we doomed to suffer the out-dated aspects of the Braves Way in perpetuity? It has been 14 years and counting since the Atlanta Braves advanced in the postseason. You can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results. We’ll have to wait and see in John Coppolella offers any new solutions as the new General Manager of the Atlanta Braves.
