The first big surprise of the SEC East Power Rankings is that the South Carolina Gamecocks are now in the cellar. When your team is the first in the SEC to give up over 100 points in a season, it’s proof that the Gamecocks defense isn’t going to do this team any favors in 2015.
USC needed beat Mizzou in the Battle of Columbia on Saturday to stay in competition for a bowl bid. Now that feels like a fantasy at this point for South Carolina. I’m not sure the Gamecocks win an SEC game this year. They’re hosting #7 LSU at Noon on Saturday. Leonard Fournette should have a field day against the USC defense.
I’m looking at their schedule and see only three games the Gamecocks might win (Vanderbilt, @Tennessee, The Citadel). This feels like a best case scenario 5-7 team. USC is going to a bowl game and they might finish 3-9 (0-8)! South Carolina hosts LSU at Noon on Saturday on ESPN.

Vanderbilt may not get to a bowl game in 2015, but they have hung tough in their three losses (Western Kentucky, Georgia, and Ole Miss). I think they have a great opportunity to beat South Carolina in Week 7 (Vandy has a bye in Week 6). Should VU knock of Houston and three SEC teams, they’ll be bowl eligible.
The defense is getting their for HC Derek Mason. Ralph Webb is a great running back for the ‘Dores. Should QB Johnny McCrary limit his mistakes in SEC play, then maybe Vandy plays spoiler this year. They look like a 4-8, 5-7 team. One more year of Mason should get VU bowl eligible in 2016. I don’t think they’re that far away, honestly.
