WALTER TAVARES IS RAW, BUT COULD BE REALLY GOOD

The one player/storyline that I was most impressed with following this game is the play of Walter “Edy” Tavares. The Atlanta Hawks second round pick a year ago out of Cape Verde, the 7’3” center signed with the Hawks this offseason. We all knew he was raw — and he looked rough around the edges on Wednesday — but even as an unfinished product, Tavares could be a very special player.

In 11 minutes of play, Tavares scored 11 points and had 4 rebounds. What impressed me was what you can’t see in a box score. Tavares’s wingspan is capable of altering the game in so many ways. He was able to alter shots, defend the basket, and contend for blocks. If Edy can continue to develop and get consistent playing time, I see him becoming a significant part of the rotation because of his defensive prowess.

His size affords him and the Atlanta Hawks a significant advantage in the front-court, and adds even more flexibility for Mike Budenholzer. I can’t wait to see Tavares play for the rest of the preseason, and am looking forward to what he can accomplish in 2015-2016.
