Georgia Bulldogs Host Georgia Southern on Senior Day

The Georgia Bulldogs will play Between the Hedges tonight at 7PM ET versus the Georgia Southern Eagles. The game will air on ESPNU.

The Georgia Bulldogs still have their eyes set on possibly ten wins in 2015. That total seemed improbable after the rough October for the UGA program, but after two wins over Kentucky and Auburn to close out SEC play at 5-3, the Dawgs sit at 7-3 (5-3) with a strong Georgia Southern team coming to Athens.

This will be the 6th time both members of the University of Georgia system will face off on the gridiron, with UGA beating GSU the first five meetings. However, Georgia Southern is 7-2 in the Sun Belt and will present a difficult task for the Georgia football team.

Like Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern uses the triple option offense and the Georgia Bulldogs will have to play their man and wrap up their tackles on whomever is carrying the ball for the Eagles. While this seemed like a tune-up for the triple option of Georgia Tech at the start of the year, the two bowl eligible teams in Division are playing Between the Hedges tonight, not in Atlanta next week as the Jackets are 3-7 on the year.

More from UGA Football

Nick Saban’s “Tin Horn” rant made reference to his respect for the Georgia Southern rushing attack, so the Eagles aren’t exactly flying under the radar in this game. HC Mark Richt rarely loses home games to non-SEC teams and though it is Senior Day in Athens, Georgia won’t take Georgia Southern lightly. Both teams are bowl eligible and can each win 10 games this season.

While the offensive side of the ball is always interesting, I’m watching the defense more in this game, as defending the triple option takes commitment and intense focus. The Georgia Bulldogs don’t have an excuse to not be ready for it, as they play Georgia Tech every season. Look for DC Jeremy Pruitt to get creative in how the Dawgs stuff the run in this one.

Expect nearly all of Georgia Southern’s offense to come on the ground, as they pass the ball even less than Georgia Tech does. Under Pruitt, I’ve felt more comfortable with pass defense than stopping the run, due in large part that he is also the secondary coach.

While I do expect the Dawgs to come out on top, should we see consistently poor tackling efforts in the onset, things could very interesting tonight at Sanford Stadium. Georgia Southern is a good team and the Dawgs better be ready to play some football.
