10. Hutson Mason (2010-14)
Hutson Mason is the classic example of a UGA signal caller that waited patiently for his opportunity to lead the Georgia Bulldogs on Fall Saturdays. Mason was a 3-Star recruit out of Lassiter High School in Marietta, GA in the Class of 2010. While playing for the Trojans, he developed a strong reputation of being one of the more accurate passers in the state.
Unfortunately for Mason, he had to wait for his opportunity in 2014, as he served primarily as the backup to record-setting quarterback Aaron Murray for most of his time in Athens. Mason ended up taking a rare redshirt in what would have been his true junior season (2012), when it became clear that Murray would end up a four-year starter for head coach Mark Richt.
In 2014, Hutson Mason finally got his opportunity and while he wasn’t glamorous as a passer, he did lead the Dawgs to a 10-3 season in 2014, finishing No. 9 in the final AP Top 25 poll. While he never stretched the field with his underwhelming arm, Mason completed 67.9% of his passes in his redshirt senior season, throwing for 2,168 yards, 21 touchdowns, and only four interceptions.
While the Dawgs came up short of lofty expectations in 2014, Hutson Mason provided the UGA offense strength in times of struggle. He perfectly complemented UGA’s elite rushing attack and had the Dawgs beat either South Carolina or Florida, Mason would have led Georgia to an SEC Championship Game and possibly one of the first New Year’s Six bowl games.
Mason finished his UGA career with a 65% completion percentage for 3,492 passing yards, 29 touchdowns passes, seven interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 151.4. He also rushed for six touchdowns, despite not having great foot speed. Hutson Mason could have started for two to three years in many schools in the Power 5, but his commitment to Georgia should never get overlooked.
