7. Buck Belue (1978-81)
Buck Belue is best known for being the quarterback on the 1980 National Championship team at the University of Georgia. His pass to Lindsay Scott in the Georgia-Florida rivalry game down in Jacksonville in 1980 made Belue a UGA legend, by saving the Dawgs in their route to perfection that season.
Belue stands as the most iconic quarterback of the Vince Dooley Era of Georgia Bulldogs football. In a time where running the football was the most important aspect of the game, Belue was an effective signal caller during the peak years of the Dooley Era in Athens.
Before coming to Athens, Belue was a star quarterback at the most prolific high school football institution in the state, the Valdosta Wildcats in Valdosta, Georgia. Belue was an effective three-year starter for the Dawgs and had great seasons both as a junior and as a senior in 1980 and 1981.
While everyone remembers Belue from the 1980 National Championship season, he perhaps had his better season under center during his 1981 senior campaign. Buck Belue was the second most accurate passer in the NCAA that year with a 60.6 completion percentage, throwing for 1,603 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Buck Belue in his UGA career completed 54.5% of his passes for 3,864 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. His statistics aren’t overly impressive, but he did aid in the Georgia Bulldogs’ most recent national championship to date. 35 years later, it still matters immensely.
