The Georgia Bulldogs officially announced the hirings of James Coley, Marshall Malchow, and Dell McGee as part of Kirby Smart‘s 2016 UGA coaching staff.

Late Sunday afternoon the Georgia Bulldogs named three more members to Kirby Smart’s 2016 football staff: James Coley, Marshall Malchow, and Dell McGee. Coley will become the next wide receivers coach. Malchow will be in charge of the recruiting department. McGee will coach the running backs.

All three men’s names had been in circulation with the UGA program for the last week and the athletic department made it official Sunday night. Coley was Al Golden‘s offensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes the last three seasons. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles from 2010 to 2012 and was the tight ends coach before that (2008-09). He worked with Smart as a part of Nick Saban’s Miami Dolphins coaching staff in 2006.

Malchow ran the player personnel department at both the University of Washington and Boise State University as a part of Chris Petersen‘s staffs the last four years. He is an Augusta native and did his undergrad work at the University of Alabama. Perhaps it is a return to the southeast that brought Malchow down from the Pacific Northwest.

McGee was the interim head coach of the Georgia Southern Eagles, leading them to a crush bowl victory over Bowling Green State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. He was supposedly going to follow departed GSU head coach Willie Fritz to Tulane, but opted to stay in-state and coach the running backs on Kirby Smart’s staff. McGee is the former head coach of Carver High School, a football powerhouse out of Columbus, Georgia.

As of now, Smart still needs to hire a tight ends coach, a defensive backs coach, an inside linebackers coach, a special teams coordinator if he chooses, and most importantly a defensive coordinator.

The hirings of James Coley, Marshall Malchow, and Dell McGee join offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jim Chaney, offensive line coach Sam Pittman, and defensive assistant Glenn Schumann as the six external hires of the Kirby Smart era in Athens. Smart also kept outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer and defensive line coach Tracy Rocker in Athens as remnants of Mark Richt‘s 2015 coaching staff.

With spring semester, and coincidentally the National Championship Game that Smart will coordinate the defense for Alabama, only a week away, could we expect the rest of Smarts’ staff to come together by this time next week? If Smart chooses to bring somebody with him from Tuscaloosa for any of the remaining positions, that may have to come after the Tide’s game with the Clemson Tigers has reached a conclusion.
