Kirby Smart is officially back in Athens after last night’s National Championship for Alabama. Here is a look at his completed 2016 coaching staff for UGA.

Less than eight hours removed from winning the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game as the defensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide, new Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is back in Athens, GA and has assembled his 2016 coaching staff of nine top assistants.

Radi Nabulsi of UGASports.com has compiled a list of the nine UGA assistants that will server under Kirby Smart below:

The last remaining hire that Kirby Smart needed to make to complete his 2016 coaching staff at Georgia was officially hire a defensive coordinator. The University of Georgia made it official that former NFL defensive coordinator and 2015 Alabama defensive backs coach Mel Tucker would become the next defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs Tuesday morning.

Now that Tucker and defensive assistant Glenn Schumann are in Athens after fulfilling their obligations for the 2015 National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide, Kirby Smart now has his staff complete with four defensive coaches and five on offense.

What we know is that on offense, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jim Chaney will lead a staff consisting of offensive line coach Sam Pittman, wide receivers coach James Coley, tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Shane Beamer, and running backs coach Dell McGee. All five were officially hired by Georgia before the National Championship Game in Glendale, Arizona.

Defensively, Tucker and Schumann will join the two remnants of the 2015 Mark Richt staff in defensive line coach Tracy Rocker and outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer. Kirby Smart will likely help out with the defense as at this time, neither a defensive backs coach or an inside linebackers coach has officially been named. Expect Tucker to likely coach the secondary, but Schumann may not get a positional designation this year, leaving the question: Who is the 2016 inside linebackers coach of the Georgia Bulldogs?

Perhaps in Kirby Smart’s scheme, he may give all the linebacker responsibility to Sherrer, but could delegate positional leadership to that group for either Schumann or Tucker. Then again, maybe Smart looks after the inside linebackers or Sherrer shifts to the inside, leaving the outside linebackers to either Schumann, Smart, or Tucker?

We will have to wait and see what exactly the designation for the defensive staff becomes. Keep in mind that this staff is going to look vastly different from what we saw in the Mark Richt era. I mean, we have a special teams coordinator finally in Shane Beamer, but do expect the nine on Kirby Smart’s staff to adequately cover the positional responsibilities of the 2016 Georgia Bulldogs football team. Go Dawgs!
