Georgia Bulldogs: 5 top targets for National Signing Day
By John Buhler
Derrick Brown is the No. 1 player in the state, the No. 9 player nationally, and the No. 4 defensive tackle in his high school graduating class. The 6’3.75″, 317 pound interior lineman out of Lanier High School in Buford, Georgia has been a primary target of new head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs Kirby Smart.
Smart flew from Athens to Buford in a helicopter to visit with Brown and his high school coach at Lanier about the Longhorns’ star player possibly Committing to the G. In college football, it is all about dominating the line of scrimmage, especially on the defensive side of the football. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a meteoric rise in the value of defensive tackles.
This is clearly illustrated by Brown’s No. 9 overall ranking, but only the fourth best defensive tackle in the country. Regardless of ranking, the Georgia Bulldogs would love to have Derrick Brown play for them in Athens.

The two schools that are battling for Brown’s commitment are the in-state Georgia Bulldogs and their SEC West rival in the Auburn Tigers. If it is all about early playing time, then it makes sense for Brown to commit to Auburn and play for Rodney Garner’s defensive line. He’ll have a better chance of starting early, as UGA already has two five-star defensive tackles on their team in Trent Thompson and incoming freshman Julian Rochester. It’ll go down to the wire for Brown’s commitment, but the Dawgs are still very much in this fight for signing Derrick Brown.
Prediction: Auburn Tigers
