The Atlanta Braves claimed New York Mets’ left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez off waivers on Wednesday, May 25. What will Alvarez bring the Braves?

The Atlanta Braves obtained left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez on Wednesday afternoon. He had been designated for assignment by the Mets on Monday in order for them to create a 40-man roster spot for Ty Kelly.

Will the acquiring of Alvarez help to alleviate some of the Braves’ struggles? For now, he has been assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett.

The 27-year-old pitcher’s professional career has been composed of time spent with the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and now with the Atlanta Braves.

Alvarez spent 2007-2009 with the Phillies. In 2007, Alvarez saw a 1-3 record with a 4.46 ERA in a total of 11 games. In 2008, his record was 4-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 18 games.

In 2009, the same year he was released by the Phillies, Alvarez finished with a 3-4 record and a 2.59 ERA in 14 games.

His career with the New York Mets began in January of 2013, where he played in the minors until joining the majors in September 2013. Alvarez finished the 2014 season with a 13.50 ERA in 4 games.

In 2015, as Alvarez furthered his major league career with the Mets, he also saw his first career win against the Washington Nationals. Alvarez struck out Nationals’ outfielder Bryce Harper in the bottom of the 6th.

However, in 2015 Alvarez also underwent a groin injury that sent him to rehab. It was reported to be unlikely that Alvarez would pitch again in 2015. Thus, his season ended with a 1-0 record and a 12.27 ERA in six games.

He made a total of 10 relief appearances in 2014 and 2015 with the Mets. Alvarez has also spent time with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Last season he held a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. However, his 2016 stats have been on the decline, with a 9.98 ERA and 2.09 WHIP in 17 games.

Now Alvarez is headed to the Gwinnett Braves where he will continue to develop. Could he be the answer to the Braves’ search for a left-handed relief pitcher? If Alvarez can somehow find his way back to his 2.45 ERA ways, good things could be in store for the Atlanta Braves.
