Atlanta Hawks: Who Will Back Up Dennis Schroder?
By Jed May
With the season less than a week away, the backcourt situation for the Hawks is unsettled. Here’s a look at who could potentially be the backups for starting point guard Dennis Schroder.
A week ago, the point guard outlook for the Atlanta Hawks was fairly stable. Dennis Schroder would start, with veteran Jarrett Jack as the primary backup. But over the past several days, Atlanta has requested waivers on both Jack and fellow point guard Will Bynum. That leaves Schroder, who has never been a full-time starter, as the only man left with a solid role.
So who will serve as Schroder’s primary backup? As it stands, the Hawks still have a few options left on the roster.
DeAndre’ Bembry
Bembry was the 21st selection of the Atlanta Hawks in June’s NBA Draft. He was drafted as a forward, but he has a reputation as an excellent passer. During his career at St. John’s, Bembry averaged 3.6 assists per game, with a career best 4.5 assists per contest in his senior season.
Like Bembry, Delaney has had some good moments in exhibition games. In what would roughly equate to back up minutes, he has put up 7.2 points and 2.6 assists per game so far in a Hawks uniform. He also does a good job of taking care of the ball, averaging less than one turnover per game. This could work in Delaney’s favor, as ball security is crucial for a backup point guard.

Conclusion
In recent days, the Atlanta Hawks have requested waivers on veteran point guards Jarrett Jack and Will Bynum. This left the backup point guard situation fairly muddled. However, the team would not have made these moves if they didn’t feel confident other players could fill the void. As it stands, rookies DeAndre Bembry and Malcolm Delaney look to be in line to get the first cracks at spelling starter Dennis Schroder.
