Atlanta has only one major sports championship that came in 1995 when the Atlanta Braves won the World Series. Since then the Hawks, Braves, and Falcons have done little besides one and done appearances in the playoffs.   Atlanta has been much maligned this week for not being a major sports town.

While that may be true it is also true that Atlanta’s fan base is  one of the loyalist fan bases that there is in all of sports when you consider how long they have waited for one of their teams to play for a championship. The story of Atlanta’s lack of a fan base is overblown and a bit off target. While Atlanta may not be the best sports town in the world its fans have stuck with their teams for a long time with no success.

The Falcons need this win both for themselves and for a city that hasn’t had much to cheer for in a long while. With the Braves in rebuild mode and the Hawks seemingly stuck in neutral unable to beat the Cavs.  The Falcons have built a team that is going to compete for a long time to come and because of that it would be surprising if this is the last time the Falcons are playing for a Super Bowl in the next few seasons.
