Atlanta Braves: Week One Spring Training Recap
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have officially gotten their season underway going 1-2 in the early going this Spring Training.
The biggest story early in the Braves’ spring training camp was Matt Kemp listening to the front office and coaches and coming into camp in much better shape than he has been in seasons past. Kemp is expected to have a big season in Atlanta hitting behind Freddie Freeman,Dansby Swanson, and Ender Inciarte.
The Braves have started out Spring Training 1-2 with R.A. Dickey, Julio Teheran, and Bartolo Colon all getting in early work pitching two innings as they begin to work up as the regular season is getting closer.
Continuing to look for another bench bat has been a story in Braves’ camp as well as they look for a power hitter to add a bit of pop to the bench or a true 4th outfielder. Either would improve the Braves bench by a lot and offer them some much needed Major League level options off the bench.
Mike Foltynewicz is scheduled to start today’s spring game as he kicks off his 2017 campaign. Folty is the projected 5th starter in the current rotation and would have to struggle greatly to be passed by any of the young arms sitting behind him on the depth chart.
Since Spring Training has started the Braves did add a depth option on their roster to sit behind Freddie Freeman. Claiming Christian Walker who will add some depth to the Braves roster and have the opportunity to fight for a bench spot if the Braves don’t add to their roster further.
The Braves added a former Georgia Bulldogs football player as well signing Sanders Commings to a Minor League deal. Commings inevitably will draw comparisons to Tim Tebow who is also trying to transform into a baseball player in the Met’s minor league system.
