Atlanta Braves: Dispatches From Gwinnett and the AAA Club
By W. M. Lawson
The Atlanta Braves are in the midst of a nine game road trip, but there was some quality baseball to be found in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day weekend is a time when families get together, with many traveling, and fellowship around pools, lakes and grills. Naturally, it is also a time for reflection and gratitude for those who gave their lives so that we can do those things. Baseball is usually a part of that celebration, and while the Atlanta Braves are traveling themselves, the Gwinnett Braves were in town and flashed promise.
It was a beautiful day at Coolray Field on Sunday. It was a beautiful day for baseball. The G-Braves looked to have an easy time of it, for most of the afternoon, winning a 6-1 decision over the visiting Syracuse Chiefs. Though, at (15-30), the Chiefs aren’t all that good.
Still, there are a couple of things to note and notice, if you are a Braves fan and are interested in this current reconstruction of our beloved Atlanta Braves. The future of the franchise in Gwinnett.
First, while Atlanta was playing Anaheim, and Andrelton Simmons was reminding us of just how good that dude really is (I had forgotten), Sean Newcomb pitched a solid 5 innings. Newcombe, who came to Atlanta in the Simmons trade, and who the Atlanta folks hope is a future star as a starter in Atlanta, gave up 1 run on 3 hits with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. He was also consistently hitting the 94-95 MPH range. That was fun to watch. Dude has “pop”.

There were other possible Atlanta additions in 2017 that showed some stuff. Ozzie Albies, the promising 2nd Baseman/SS, went 1 for 4, but flashed lightning quickness on the base pads.
Dustin Peterson, the intriguing LF coming off an injury, went 1 for 4, but was timely and had 3 RBI. Anthony Recker hit the ball all day and was probably the MVP, other than Newcomb.
In all, it was good to put some eyes on these dudes in whom so much of the Atlanta Braves’ near future is invested. It was also a really enjoyable experience at the ball park.
If you get a chance, go check them out in person. It won’t be long before you’ll have to pay a lot more to see some of them live.
