Atlanta Braves: Sean Newcomb An Ace?
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have given rookie Sean Newcomb an extended audition from the Braves rotation. Should fans expect Newcomb to continue to be the ace that he was in his first start with the Braves?
Sean Newcomb got off to a great start with Atlanta even though the Braves took the loss against the Mets Newcomb gave the Braves quality innings and didn’t give up an earned run. The only run came off of a botched throw from Newcomb.
He is set to face his second Major League game this time against the Miami Marlins. Newcomb has said that he hopes to continue to build momentum in his second start. His first start will be hard to beat but it is important for fans to remember that Newcomb could struggle as he adjusts to Major League hitters.
He has the stuff to be a dominant strike out pitcher it isn’t his ability that will have to catch up rather his mental game. Matt Wisler is one recent example of a player who struggled to mentally catch up to his actual pitching ability.
Newcomb is an ace in the making for the Braves but one that is going to have to be given time to grow and take a beating or two and show that he is able to bounce back or battle through when he doesn’t have his best stuff.
Location has been Newcomb’s one mechanical struggle that has slowed his progress in the minor leagues. Limiting walks and getting outs early in the count where two things that the Braves know Newcomb is still working on and the fans should be aware and patient with him as well.
At this point in the season it is unlikely the Braves can become contenders they are focusing their attention where they should be giving young players like Sean Newcomb and Rio Ruiz a chance to prove they are part of the Braves future.
