Atlanta Braves: Top Five Best 1st Basemen in Braves’ History
By Joeli Poole
With the emergence of Matt Adams at First Base, the Atlanta Braves have a unique and good problem: Two quality 1st Basemen. Here is a list of the greatest in their history.
Sid Bream (1991-1993)
The Braves signed Sid Bream after he became a free agent following his 1990 season with the Pittsburg Pirates. Bream didn’t receive as much playing time as he would have liked, due to a lingering injury, but he does have one of the most famous plays in the National League Championship Series under his belt. It was during game 7 of the 1992 NLCS against his former team, the Pirates. The Pirates had a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Braves were up at bat with Drabek giving up a lead-off double, allowing another runner on base as a result of an infield error, and walking Bream to load the bases. Reliever Stan Belinda comes in and secures 2 outs before Francisco Cabrera steps up to the plate. Cabrera slams a single to left field letting Justice score easily to tie the game, but as Bond was making the throw from left field to home it slid a little towards first forcing the catcher, Mike LaValliere, to move, giving Bream just enough space to slide in to home plate to win the game, sending the Braves to the World Series for the second year in a row, earning him a place as a Braves all time first baseman favorite.
As Braves First Baseman come and go, some earn a spot in Atlanta baseball history for their plays defensively or at the plate. Though their stats vary, one thing is certain, they have all made a difference in the hearts of Braves’ fans for their all time performance in the uniform or for that one spectacular play that made all the difference to Braves’ fans that season.
