The University of Georgia football program received a commitment Tuesday from the #1 rated Running Back for the 2018 class. It’s a game-changer on multiple levels.

Fans of the University of Georgia Bulldogs football program have been waiting for this day. In fact, they’ve been waiting for this day with an air of hesitation and consternation. After compiling a nationally rated recruiting class in 2017, the highest in Georgia Football history, the 2018 class has been slow to form. Not anymore.

At 12:00 PM EDT, Zamir “Zeus” White, from Scotland High School in North Carolina, plucked a black UGA hat from the table and immediately became a fan favorite. This 6-1, 220 pound man-child who boasts a 4.4 40 meter and 10.5 100 meter time, as a Junior in High School, literally embodies the hopes and dreams of Georgia Football fans.

White’s commitment is significant for a number of reasons:

  • The State. White is now the latest in a long running (sorry, had to do it) line of top-tier RBs from the State of North Carolina to head down to Athens, Ga. Names like Keith Marshall, Todd Gurley, even Tim Worley from back in the day, form a formidable group of backs that have serious tradition. It has become “a thing”.
  • The Class. As mentioned, the 2018 class has been slow to take shape. The loss of freakish LB Adam Anderson (Rome, Ga.), on G-Day, no less, hasn’t helped. UGA has dudes committed who could be very good in their careers, but no big name show-stoppers. Now it does. In fact, a player like White will no doubt attract other players, especially on his side of the ball. There are a couple of 5-star QBs and O- Linemen that took notice, I’m sure.
  • The Backfield

. The 2018 Backfield, presumptively, of Brian Herrien, Elijah Holyfield, D’Andre Swift, and now White, will match total talent last seen since Marshall, Gurley, Chubb, and Michel. In short, you’ll have four future NFL Draft picks in one position room.

    More from ATL All Day

But that is mostly conjecture. What we do know for fact is how Zamir White has conducted himself through, what is definitely, a difficult and arduous process. By all accounts, Mr. White is  humble and hard working in spite of his growing celebrity and status.

There are stories of him not taking water at practice and of stiff-arming 2 and 3 guys at a time, while romping for TDs. But his personal story trumps all of that stuff. He’s a kid who struggled early physically, and grew into a physical specimen that few would dismiss. But he did it humbly and graciously.

There’s still some meat on that 2018 recruiting class bone for UGA. Kirby Smart and Co. still have a lot of work to do. But the addition of Zamir “Zeus “White in this class is a jump start and high kick. It’s a big deal.

    Welcome to Athens, Zeus.
