NFL: Quarterback Power Rankings
By Kit Anderson
- Andrew Luck
Andrew Luck is a prime example of a quarterback being defined by the talent around him and not the true level of talent he has. Looking at the Colt’s roster they are easily one of the three worst teams in the League yet they are not simply because they have Andrew Luck under center.
Few quarterbacks could have taking the absolute punishment that Luck has taken the last couple of years. It seemed that from the time he snapped the ball he had defenders in his face or wrapped around his waist. The absolute lack of talent and protection make Luck’s numbers all the more impressive while alone they would make him above average in truth he is far better than that.
Andrew Luck with a contending roster would already have won a Super Bowl. That may be a big statement but it is true. His talent and understanding of the game would put him easily inside the top five if he had any help.
The worry now for the Colts has to be how will the punishment that he is taking now affect him later in his career. For some (Tony Romo) it does not end well hopefully the Colts find a way to protect Luck better in 2017.
- Ben Roethlisberger
For someone who has such a reputation as being a tough guy who cannot be knocked out of games easily Ben Roethlisberger seems to always be hobbled. For the last three seasons now Big Ben seems to be hurt or on the bench or hobbling around the field attempting to play at the level we are used to seeing him play at.
His ranking is based simply on the respect he has earned with his play in past seasons. With the recent retirement bluff and consistently struggling to be on the field Roethlisberger’s career is beginning to trend downwards.
Even with the best running back in the game and a top three receiver he still seemed unable to play at the level he has in years past. It may soon be time for the Steelers to start thinking about their future beyond Big Ben.
While that may be hard to swallow for some Steeler’s faithful it is true and something that they will need to address this season. For now though Roethlisberger remains a borderline top ten quarterback who could easily turn back the clock and remind everyone of the player he has been in seasons past.
