Atlanta Braves: Place Veterans on Revocable Waivers
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have made their first moves towards a trade since the trade deadline a few days ago. R.A. Dickey and Jim Johnson became the first players that the Braves will attempt to pass through waivers.
It will not be the only players the Atlanta Braves will attempt to pass through waivers but the timing of passing both Dickey and Johnson through waivers may say something about the Braves hope of moving on from both of them.
Jim Johnson has been the closer for the Braves on-and-off for the last few seasons moving on from Johnson and targeting one of the better closers on the free-agent market next season would be a wise decision.
Johnson has been unable to consistently save games all season and would likely net little return in a potential trade if any. Trading Johnson would likely simply be a salary dump to move on from the veteran reliever and to focus on improving the Braves bullpen for the future.
R.A. Dickey has been a solid contributor in the Braves rotation of the original veteran trio that was added to make the Braves rotation “stronger” in the off-season only Dickey remains. Trading R.A. would likely net the Braves a small return but he should only be dealt if it is a real return that the Braves could benefit from.
It is important to remember however, that this is all very hypothetical the Braves will attempt to send many of their players through waivers and not all will pass through and even those who do may not be dealt.
August trades are complicated but still very possible and probable for a Braves team that is limping towards the end of the summer with no hopes of postseason baseball. There are still plenty of reasons to watch as the Braves continue their youth movement.
