Atlanta Braves Sweep Phillies In Cathartic Doubleheader
By W. M. Lawson
The Atlanta Braves took two in Philly today. That always feels good. But today was especially cathartic.
No self-respecting Atlanta Braves (59-72) fan is comfortable losing to the Philadelphia Phillies. There have been a bunch of self-respecting Braves fans who have been really uncomfortable this year when Philly’s name shows up on the schedule.
And it’s incredibly frustrating because the Phillies (49-83) are so incredibly bad. Notice that they are a full 10 1/2 games worse on the year than our Braves. In fact, if Philly hadn’t gone 11-2 against our beloved Braves before today, they would barely be north of 40 wins at the end of August. They just aren’t good.

So, after losing the first game of the series, and getting rained out last night, Atlanta came out and won both games of a double-header today. I could go into the stats, but at this point, what does that matter? They won. Finally. On the road. In Philadelphia.
And let’s be realistic, one has to reflect and remember the tempered expectations from March. 75-80 wins would’ve been considered a small, but positive, move in the right direction. With a starting nine that is in the middle of serious transition, and hardly any pitching.
By this writer’s count, after looking at the schedule, 75-80 wins is still very possible. A couple of winning streaks, and the team could get north of 80.
As the Southeast turns its gaze toward football, Atlanta Braves fans still watch with expectation. The expectation of improvement. Of building something.

We’ll know soon enough. But it all started by winning two today on the road. That is definitely a positive.
