Atlanta Falcons: Green Bay Win A Little Hair Of The Dog
By W. M. Lawson
The Atlanta Falcons (2-0) jumped on the Green Bay Packers and beat them with a resounding 34-23 score. The win Sunday night was a little of that “hair of the dog”.
Full disclosure: It took me a while to write this. Meaning, I waited. Nobody wants to just straight up kiss the backside of the team you cover. It’s unseemly. My problem, though, is that this is ATL ALL Day, I’m an Atlanta boy, and they are the Atlanta Falcons. And after a win like that, you gotta take a minute, or two.
So, let’s get this out of the way. Good gawd that felt good. From the opening kick (when our guy got blasted), and when they got Julio Jones going early, they looked different from Week 1. They looked crisp. They looked fresh. It was a big fat wet kiss to Durty Bird Nation, and we kissed back.
That said, there is nothing fan fare in saying that this win, the nature of this win, the method of this win, and the timing of this win, are all significant. All of those things are important and 2017 defining.

They won the game, most importantly. That’s the what. They controlled the game. That’s the how. They christened “The Benz” with a resounding and NFL reverberating victory. That’s the where. They beat a team (Green Bay) that always gets calls, and when they are losing, the national announcers sound disappointed and apologetic. That’s the who. I said national announcers. They won with a national audience. It was the Sunday night game. That’s the when.
But that last one speaks to something most significant: The timing. It couldn’t have come at a better time for Atlanta Falcons fans. The fan base needed that one. My suspicion is that the team probably could’ve used the infusion of confidence, as well.
The macro picture from this win is that our beloved Atlanta Falcons are, once again, perched atop the NFC and look to be a genuinely good team, when hitting stride. 2016 success wasn’t an aberration.
The micro picture from that win was that it healed us. It reminded us that this team can, and probably will, win in big games. It reassured the fans that this coaching staff is legit. It reminded the team that the window isn’t nailed shut.

They say when you go out, you need a little “hair of the dog” the next morning. That’s what that was. Hangover killer.
