The Georgia Bulldogs (7-0) finished “Work Week”, and go into a bye Saturday. They also got good news on the recruiting trail. Something is afoot.

If you are a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, everything is pretty, pretty, pretty good. And if you are a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm, you’ll get that reference. The hope in this “work week” was to get healthy and get better. With the recent commitments of two local “Dudes”, UGA got better. On many different levels.

There’s still a little hesitation in Dawg Nation. Fans want to believe. They do believe. But they also know history. If you don’t beat Florida, you wind up needing help. Have to beat Florida.

This is bye week, though, and fans can wait and watch without worry. Fans can repose with the knowledge that UGA is undefeated and have looked good doing so. Under adverse circumstances, no less. In Kirby Smart’s 2nd year, no less. It’s a good feeling.

As big as the Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is, and will be, there is something equally as big happening, and it is happening in the future.

More from ATL All Day

Recently, the Georgia Bulldogs received two commitments from presumptive 2018 High School graduates. Both dudes are game changers and program definers. They also happen to be Georgia Boys. Justin Fields (QB), the #1 Overall Player in the 2018 class, committed on 10/06/2017. Adam Anderson (LB), the #2 OLB Overall, committed on 10/19/2017. The talent of these young men is undeniable. Most already presume that they will affect the course of the program, at some point. They are that good.

There is something else, afoot, however. It’s an undercurrent of shifting in the recruiting world. One that could be significant for years.

It has been an axiom with Georgia fans for a while that, if UGA kept “the Georgia Boys”, they could win championships. In fact, it is hard to argue. It has been, however, hard to change the fact that that didn’t happen much. Regional teams and rivals have always beaten UGA with Georgia Boys. It’s the quintessential “insult to injury scenario”.

With the commitments of Misters Fields and Anderson, though, there is a sense that tides have shifted. Assuming that both young men don’t change their minds (think about that), Georgia would have beaten FSU and Auburn for Fields’ services and the Dawgs would have beaten LSU and Alabama for Anderson’s services. That is different. And real talk? Kind of surprising.

It’s surprising that this is happening this quickly. But, it is. All of a sudden, Georgia is winning very public battles for élite recruits against teams that have all won National Championships recently. That’s different.

And it goes back to 2017. Jake Fromm? Heard of him? Alabama flip. Walter Grant? Heard of him? Deangelo Gibbs? Monty Rice? He’s a Bama Boy. But 2018 is different. The talent is there at the top, but it isn’t as deep as in most years. At least not in the State of Georgia. And the state school is going to have a lot of state kids play football for the state school from the 2018 class. When other schools, championship schools, wanted them as much. That’s different.

I’m not saying UGA will win anything. I have no idea whether Kirby Smart, or any of his coaches, will even be in Athens after this year. But I do know that something has changed, and it’s not just 2017. Business has picked up in Athens. We will find out if it is sustainable. If it is, then, look out.
