Top Five SEC Football Championships in the Georgia Dome
By Kit Anderson
3. Florida Gators beat the Alabama Crimson Tide 24-23 in the first SEC Championship at the Dome.
Not many SEC fans will remember this game but it was the first played at the Georgia Dome and one of the best in a nail biting game between the Tide and the Gators. Danny Wuerffel capped a late drive with a two yard touchdown toss to give the Gators the tie and a win with a successful PAT.
This game headed the Gators and Alabama towards conference dominance with at least one of the two teams appearing in most every SEC championship game played since.
The first game in the Dome was a success and started a long tradition that lasted more than two decades and will now start anew in the Atlanta Falcon’s new stadium in Atlanta.
For the Gators this game is especially memorable because it was a third straight SEC championship appearance for Florida on their way to appearing in five straight SEC championship games and seven of nine.
It was an underrated dominance that the Gators had in the SEC similar to the dominance that fans have seen from a stifling Alabama defense in recent memory. This game will be remembered not only for the level of play but for being one of the best SEC championships to be played and the first in the Georgia Dome.
