It has been a year of lots of big ups and big downs for Atlanta Sports. The City. And her fans. Things aren’t perfect, but we should always give thanks.

So, here we are. A time when we all take time to be thankful. As an Atlanta Sports fan that idea feels like smiling when the thorns are stronger than the rose. It has been a year of the sweetest and the sourest. So, here were are. Supposed to be thankful. But we do have some things to be thankful for. May I count the ways?

Yeah. It’s incumbent we start here. The Atlanta Falcons. Our Always Atlanta Falcons. The worse loss in Super Bowl history is still tough to digest. I think the team is still doing that very thing. Kind of like a hangover. But, they were there. They made THE GAME. And here we are, now. Six games left. 4-2 gets you a wild card. 5-1 wins the Division. Atlanta Falcons fans should be thankful that the team, and fans, have a chance to make history. Pretty sure, it is rare, for a team to lose the Super Bowl, and then make the playoffs the next year. Here we are. They can do it. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

More from ATL All Day

Georgia Swarm. That’s all that needs to be said. Well, other than, you know, Champion of NLL. And did it is fantastic fashion. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

Atlanta United FC. There are other words that will be written as a tribute, so hope this suffices. 1st year team. No one knew that the City of Atlanta would respond. Nobody knew if this team would win. Both happened. And they haven’t seen anything yet. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

The Atlanta Hawks. Sigh. It’s tough. Complete rebuild just a few short years after we were a legitimate threat to do things on a national scale. The Hawks were close to becoming feared. Not so much now. But Hawks fans should be thankful for the new GM. John Collins looks legit, and that speaks to the talent of both men I referenced in those sentences. In the midst of a tornado of circumstance, sometimes waking up and finding a foundation is a thankful thing. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

The Georgia Bulldogs. Although not all share a positive sentiment, it can’t be denied that what Kirby Smart and UGA has done has elevated the profile of local high school athletes, most of whom, will play and study somewhere else. And the Georgia Bulldogs are in a national conversation. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

Georgia Tech. Hmm. That one is difficult. If they beat Georgia, then, the season is saved? But, either way, when they get a defense that team is stout, and that is a team that will be nationally relevant, if and when they do. They also give many Atlanta kids a chance to ball out. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

And then we have our beloved Atlanta Braves. Lots of bad moves. Lots of bad looks. But we love them. It won’t be easy. It won’t be fun. The idea of resurrection is dead. It is a rebirth, and that birth just became breach with the recent penalties. But we have a skeleton of fantastic players. Players who are good enough on the field, and in the clubhouse, who could redirect, with force, the current trajectory. The Atlanta Braves have dudes who can change the direction of a franchise. Atlanta fans should be thankful.

There are other teams left out in this. That isn’t a slight. Just an oversight. Or a slight of hand. There are many reasons to be thankful. There are many reasons to be thankful as an Atlanta Sports fan. Some are in front of you. Some hide in the background.

Just don’t be that fan in the background. Be thankful. For what we have. It’s OK. In fact, it is right to be thankful. Others have it worse.
