Atlanta Falcons’ tight-end Austin Hooper had an up-and-down 2017 season. A problem that haunted many of the Falcon’s receivers. Should the Falcons give Austin Hooper another season as the starting tight-end?

One of the Atlanta Falcons many problems in the 2017 season was lack of consistent production from their tight-ends. Starting tight-end Austin Hooper had an especially inconsistent season logging multiple key catches but just as many key mistakes over the course of the season.

Hooper finished the season with 526 yards and 3 scores above average numbers for a starting tight-end that plays with Julio Jones. While the numbers may be above average Hooper’s mistakes on routes and a few key missed catches could make the Falcons take a hard look at the position.

With Jimmy Graham set to hit the market the Falcons could make a run at Graham giving them a better red-zone threat. Aside from Graham there are no clear upgrades from Hooper either in the draft or the current free agent class.

If the Falcons opt not to pursue Jimmy Graham they should stick with Austin Hooper. Hooper is still young and will continue to improve in the seasons ahead. Working on Hooper’s red-zone targets and route running should be the focus of his off-season.

To answer the question a bit more directly there is no one better than Austin Hooper who should be the Falcons starting tight-end. Barring an improbable blockbuster trade or if they chose to sign Jimmy Graham. Hooper is an above average tight-end with good hands and improving blocking ability.

Overall Hooper may have taken a step forward in 2017 despite his struggles. With Matt Ryan and the rest of the offense playing at a lower level it is hardly fair to put to much of the blame on Hooper.

If the Falcons want to take a step forward on offense particularly in the red-zone it starts with improved tight-end routes and play in 2018.
