Atlanta Falcons Should Spend Draft Picks on Quarterbacks
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons should spend draft picks on quarterbacks this off-season. In a League that is run by the quarterback there are few reasons not to add trade chips or a future starter to the Falcon’s roster.
Making the decision to draft at least one quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft is the right move for the Atlanta Falcons . Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback who is the face of the franchise and is capable of carrying the team.
Still, football has an unpredictable way of being cruel and if Ryan were to go down the Falcons lack a backup plan. Matt Schaub would be the current option on an overpaid deal to a well aged back-up quarterback.
If the season were to suddenly shift and the Falcons found themselves in need of a quarterback few fans would pick Schaub over a drafted rookie who could prove to surprise and impress. Not only that, but there is great value in drafting quarterbacks regardless of whether they are needed.
There are always teams that are on the market for a young quarterback who could exceed expectations. Adding young quarterbacks to the Falcon’s roster would allow them to learn from Matt Ryan and groom a possible replacement or add value as trade chips down the road.
No matter how you look at it if you know the NFL you know that quarterbacks are currency. Any team that doesn’t take at least one quarterback if given the chance is making a mistake.
While it is doubtful that the Falcons will trade up in the draft for a quarterback it wouldn’t be the worst decision. If they opt to use their first round pick instead on other needs they should take a risk on at least one quarterback later in the draft.
Not only because they shouldn’t trust Matt Schaub but because it is time to begin to think about life after Matt Ryan.
