Atlanta Braves Sign Depth Piece in Chris Stewart
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have added a depth piece to their organization by signing catcher Chris Stewart. Stewart was added to the team likely in case of injury and is a doubtful addition to the roster.
Chris Stewart is a solid addition for the Atlanta Braves. He will provide another receiver for the Braves young pitchers to throw to this Spring and insurance if Kurt Suzuki or Tyler Flowers were to become injured.
Stewart’s best years came with the Pirates. Over four seasons for them he hit a combined .250 with above average game calling skill. The other seven seasons of his career Stewart struggled to hit above the Mendoza line and bounced between the Major and Minor League rosters.
Signing Stewart is a meaningless blip on the radar that would only become relevant if injury struck. Since they are already planning to carry an extra arm from the bullpen this season it is extremely unlikely a third catcher could make the roster.
Overall signing Chris Stewart was a smart depth move but not one that changes any projections or expectations for the Braves.
Tyler Flowers will once again be the Braves’ starting catcher with Kurt Suzuki backing him up. Both Flowers and Suzuki are coming off of what was arguably the best season of each of their careers.
Flowers could begin the season hitting behind Freddie Freeman if no other additions are made to the lineup. Flowers has limited power but has shown an impressive ability to make consistent contact and is the current best option.
Signing Chris Stewart was a smart move from a front office that continues to play it safe and prepare for 2018.
