Atlanta Falcons Will not Consider Trading Tevin Coleman
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons have one of the best duos at running back in all of football and their GM made it quite clear they are unwilling to break the pair up. With Tevin Coleman’s contract set to expire next year any thoughts of trades were effectively squashed.
The Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff when asked on a local Atlanta radio show if he would entertain trading Coleman said the following: “We are not considering trading Tevin Coleman, period,” Dimitroff said “He’s an important part of this organization. And our focus is on this upcoming year, and trade is not in our thought process.”
A very strong statement for a general manager who has proven he isn’t afraid to make a move. Not trading Coleman makes sense for a team that hypothetically should have one of the best offenses in the League.
With a year to figure out why they failed so miserably in 2017 and with the trio of Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and Devonta Freeman all to return it would be surprising not to see them improve.
The Falcons best stretches on offense where often when they were utilizing both Freeman and Coleman as pass catchers and in play action situations.
Being unwilling to at least listen to trade offers for Coleman is still a bit surprising for a player that is unlikely to stay in Atlanta after next season.
Even if the Falcons find the cap space to keep Coleman it is hard to see Coleman opting to stay in Atlanta when he has likely earned a starting gig elsewhere.
Not to advocate trading one of the better weapons on the Falcons offense but to close the door on the possibility so easily is a mistake.
Tevin Coleman finished the season for the Falcons strong and would earn the starting job in 2018 if Freeman were to struggle to stay healthy as he did last season.
Holding onto your best offensive weapons is a smart move one that signals the Falcons are not thinking a lot about the future only winning and bringing that elusive Super Bowl victory home to Atlanta.
