Atlanta Falcons: Thoughts on Targeting Seahawks’ Michael Bennett
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons are involved in trade talks with the Seahawks surrounding defensive lineman Michael Bennett. Should the Falcons be targeting Bennett and would he fit in Atlanta?
The Atlanta Falcons defensive line has a need for pass rushers and there are few pass rushers better in the NFL than Michael Bennett. Bennett is reportedly on his way out of Seattle and the Falcons have been involved in talks to bring Bennett to Atlanta.
Targeting Bennett and at least feeling out how much it would take to bring him to Atlanta is a wise decision. His contract is well worth his performance on the field and a non-issue. What does seem to have an impact on some fan’s opinions is the fact that Bennett is very vocal about a sensitive subject in the NFL right now.
I am of course referencing the protests and decision to take a knee during the anthem in an effort to further racial equality. No matter where you fall on the issue it is a divisive one that seemingly has many fans against the idea of bringing Bennett to Atlanta.
It is a ridiculous reason not to want Bennett when you look at his talent and what he could bring to a young Atlanta defense. He would be a perfect fit in Quinn’s system and could make the Falcon’s pass rush one of the best in the League.
That alone should be enough to convince you he is well worth trading for. His politics aside, he is a great player and would fill a big hole on the Falcon’s roster. .
The only red flag or concern for the Falcons should be the fact that the Seahawks are willing to part with him even with their roster issues. Bennett finished last season with 8.5 sacks.
Bennett should be brought to Atlanta if the cost is reasonable leaving Atlanta’s draft picks more open to address other needs. More to come.
