Atlanta Falcons Badly Need to Keep Tevin Coleman
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons should do everything they can to keep Tevin Coleman in Atlanta. Though Coleman is likely to leave to get his own starting job the Falcons could be in trouble without him.
Coleman is a homerun hitter who seems to always be a step away from breaking a long run or scoring. He is exciting to watch and is one of the quickest backs in the NFL.
Not only is he a good enough runner to rival Devonta Freeman. He can catch the football out of the backfield and block with consistency. Those are traits that the Falcons will miss if Coleman escapes to free agency.
While it is the most likely scenario there are still ways that the Falcons could keep Coleman in Atlanta as a member of the Falcons.
Dependent on how much money that Matt Ryan’s new contract locks up. The Falcons are focused on youth and the draft leaving some money to sign their own players.
Tevin Coleman should be one of the Falcon’s top priorities to sign since they are unwilling to trade the speedy running back. While the thoughts on Coleman already articulated are enough alone to want to resign him there is one even better reason the Falcons should be anxious to sign him.
Devonta Freeman’s trouble with concussions haven’t been a secret and are troublesome for the team and Freeman both as a player and on a personal level.
We are only starting to fully understand head injuries and the long term health issues that they can raise and cause in football players. For Freeman to have had so many issues with head injuries already is concerning.
Concerning enough that the Falcons have to put in place a running back that can step in for Freeman if he again struggles with injury.
While that is typically what a team needs a backup running back for, the Falcon’s situation is a bit different. Different in the fact that they have a pair of explosive running backs who perfectly compliment each other and can help keep each other fresh and healthy.
Not only that but with the best backfield duo in the League, Julio Jones, and Matt Ryan under center the Falcons have to like their chances against any defense if the play calling can evolve.
