Atlanta Falcons Bring Back Defensive Lineman Derrick Shelby
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons have brought back defensive lineman Derrick Shelby. The move isn’t surprising considering the lack of depth that the Falcons currently have at the position.
Derrick Shelby joined the Atlanta Falcons on a four year that he was later cut from due to cap issues. Since then he has visited at least two other teams but elected to come back to Atlanta on a one year deal.
Shelby isn’t a particularly great pass rusher but more of a situational sub that will help keep the Falcon’s best pass rushers fresh.
Considering that, it isn’t a bad depth move and one that will help the Falcons regain from the loss of both Adrian Clayborn and Dontari Poe. They will still have to add at least one pass rusher in this year’s draft if they hope to continue to keep a strong pass rush.
Shelby will likely serve in the same capacity that he has in his past stints with the team working as a defensive end to spell guys like Vic Beasley.
The Falcons still need to address wide receiver and their LB unit as well, adding depth pieces to both.
Tight-end has already been addressed with the Falcon’s recent signing but it wouldn’t be surprising if they opt to add one more option to the position on the depth chart.
The Falcons are doubtful to make many moves as they remain pre-occupied with attempting to lock up quarterback Matt Ryan something they should have attempted last season after watching this year’s deals.
Shelby is welcome addition to the Falcons and will add much needed depth to a team with plenty of moves left to make as the off-season moves forward.
