The Masters: It Is Way Late And A Love Affair
By W. M. Lawson
The 2018 Masters Golf Tournament is in the books, and much has been written. But there are more words to say, because it was that good.
The Golf course. Tiger Woods. Jordan Spieth. Rory. Rickie. Charlie Hoffman. He made a scene. Tony Finau made a scene. Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson made a scene. Nicklaus’ grand kids made a big scene. Ultimately, Patrick Reed made the biggest scene. At a place where the only people who are allowed to make a scene are between the lines. The Masters this year, in spite of some words, was one of the greatest.
This tournament was hyped. I, personally, believe that every Masters should be hyped. It’s my favorite four days of any year. And i’m unabashed.

There was a moment, though, when it kind of became “over-hyped”. You know, on Tuesday.
But the field, and the tournament, lived up to billing. Those dudes got their arses kicked for two days, and then did their best to take it out on that course.
Ridiculous shots. Ridiculous putts. All of the other Majors matter, and will test these dudes, but, this was a test. The Augusta National showed out. It was beautiful. And exacting.
The players answered, though. And that is why this particular tournament should be loved.
Dudes, who didn’t win, hit shots that most normal humans can’t make. And they still didn’t win.
Patrick Reed balled out. He’s told people for years that he is a “Top-5” player. He just won a Green Jacket. He was right, but in the wrong way,
It will be interesting. Patrick Reed, who might be the one reason the U.S.A. won a Ryder Cup, and should be loved for that, just won the most prestigious award in all of sport. I mean that.
Will the Green Jacket define him, or will he abuse it? Who knows?
What I do know is that he is a baller. Dude has game. And, look out.
