Atlanta Braves Hot Start Has Staying Power
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves are in first place in the National League East after laying waste to the New York Mets winning 11-0. The Braves have clearly been the best team in their division a month into the season.
Watching the Atlanta Braves this season has been a surprise to even the most ardent Braves’ fans. They started hot out of the gate and are yet to slow down putting together a consistent offensive attack.
The Braves rank first in the National League in runs scored. Energetic is the word best describing a young Braves team, who puts the ball in play.
While it is simply a hot start, it is a hot start that seems to have staying power. Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. bring more talent than the Braves have seen on their roster in three years. Add in veterans Ender Inciarte and Freddie Freeman and the Braves’ lineup is formidable.
The biggest concern for the Braves was the bullpen and starting rotation. The bullpen has still had its struggles at times but the starting rotation is beginning to find a rhythm. Julio Teheran capped a great rotation run with 7 shutout innings taking a no-hitter into the 7th in today’s sweep of the Mets.
Sean Newcomb went 7 strong the night before with great control and velocity encouraging the Braves he might begin to turn into the ace they were hoping for. Newcomb was acquired in the trade of fan favorite Andrelton Simmons.
Brandon McCarthy has provided stable veteran innings. Combined the rotation has been giving the team something they have lacked for a long time, consistency.
A steady rotation, paired with a dynamic young offense and this early start does have staying power for the Braves. If they hope to become contenders deadline deals are a must, however.
The Braves need a power threat for the bench and a steady bullpen arm. If the correct moves are made this team is proving they could be potential postseason contenders.
The Braves will head back home to take on the Giants. It is time to take notice, get tickets and watch for yourself what is happening with this team.
